Best air compressor for a shed build?

Hey all, I'm planning to build a shed this spring. I'll be using nailers, staplers, and maybe a sprayer for paint. I don't have a compressor yet. What's a good one that won't break the bank but will handle the work? I've seen pancake ones at the big box, but not sure if that's enough. Any advice?

Honestly, a pancake compressor will do 95% of what you need for a shed build. I've used one for framing, trim, and even a small sprayer (though for paint you might want a separate HVLP). Just pay attention to CFM. For nailers, you need about 2-3 CFM at 90 PSI. Most pancakes are around 2.6. That's plenty. But if you're renting tools, make sure the compressor can keep up. I'd say a 6-gallon pancake is a solid start. Also, don't forget to drain the tank after use and use some oil in the line.

I agree with Gary, but I'd also look at a slightly bigger one if you plan to use a framing nailer a lot. I have the Makita MAC2400, which is a 2.5 HP, 4.2 CFM, 7.5 gallon. It's pricier but it's a workhorse. I've built a deck and a small cabin with it. Weighs a bit more but has wheels. Also, if you're painting, you might want a regulator to keep the pressure steady. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks guys. I think I'll go with a 6-gallon pancake for now. I'm not going to spray paint with it, just rolling. I'll probably use a framing nailer, but I can pause between shots. Sounds like it'll work. One more Q: oil-less or oil-lubed? I've heard oil-less is lower maintenance.

Oil-less is convenient because you don't have to check oil, but they tend to be louder and have shorter lifespan. For occasional DIY, oil-less is fine. But if you think you'll use it more often, an oil-lubed pump will last longer and run quieter. Since you're new to this, maybe go oil-less for simplicity. Just my opinion.
