Building a deck - what air compressor do I need?

Hey everyone! I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck this summer. I'll be using a framing nailer for the joists and a finish nailer for the railings. I've got a few pancake compressors in mind but I'm worried about CFM. Do I need a big twin-stack or will a 6-gallon pancake cut it? Budget is around $200-300.

If you're doing a whole deck, don't cheap out on the compressor. A pancake will run out of steam real quick. I'd go with a 8-10 gallon twin stack, at least 2.5 CFM @ 90 PSI. That'll keep up with a framing nailer. Check out the DeWalt D55180 - right in your price range and bulletproof.

Dan's got a point, but if you're on a tight budget, a 6-gallon pancake can work if you take breaks. I built my shed with a $99 Porter Cable pancake. Just let it catch up every 20-30 nails. It's slower but doable. Also, look for deals on CPO Outlets.

I agree with Dan. For a deck, you'll thank yourself for getting a bigger tank. Plus, you can use it for other stuff later like a DA sander. I'd add: get a model with a quick coupler and a hose that's at least 50 ft. Nothing worse than dragging a compressor around the deck.

Thanks all! I think I'll go with the DeWalt D55180. Sarah, I might grab a cheap pancake as a backup if I find a deal. Appreciate the help!
