Found a screaming deal on a 60-gal compressor - too good to be true?

So I stumbled on this Craigslist ad for a 60-gallon, 5 HP compressor, but the guy only wants $200. Says it runs but needs a new pressure switch. I've been needing a bigger unit for my garage anyway. What do you guys think? Worth the gamble or should I run?

Man, $200 for a 60 gal? Even if it needs a switch, that's a steal if the motor and pump are good. Check for oil leaks and listen for any knock when it runs. I paid $500 for my 26 gal and thought I got a deal. But bring a multimeter to test the motor windings, and ask to see it running if possible.

I agree with Felix, but be careful, Paul. I once bought a 'needs new switch' compressor and ended up having to replace the check valve and unloader valve too. Still got it cheap and it's been a workhorse since. Make sure it's not a Harbor Freight special that's been ridden hard - check for any recalls or if it's a known brand.

Safety first, Paul. If you go look at it, make sure the tank is not rusted out. That's a hidden danger. Tap around the bottom with a hammer - if it sounds dull or you see rust flakes, walk away. A new pressure switch is easy, but a new tank is the price of a new compressor. Also, ask if he'll let you do a quick pressure test to 150 psi and see if it holds.
