Technician shortage? Fresno's new center is a game changer!

Just read this article about Fresno City College's new Advanced Transportation Center. Seems like a solid move to get more techs trained quicker. As a woodworker, I know how hard it is to find good help. What do you all think?

I've been in the restoration business for 20 years, and finding skilled techs is a nightmare. This 'day one certified' thing sounds too good to be true - you can't beat hands-on experience. But if they can at least get them up to speed on safety and basic diagnostics, that's a start. I just hope they don't churn out a bunch of book-smart kids who can't swing a hammer.

Honestly, I'm all for it. I work with air compressors daily, and we need people who understand the ins and outs, not just how to change a filter. If these programs can give them real lab time, we might actually get some decent apprentices. But I'd like to see more schools do this, not just one in Fresno.

I'm a bit skeptical. These programs often push brand-specific training, and next thing you know, they only know how to work on one brand. I've seen it with some tech schools. But if they teach universal principles, then it could be okay. Just remember, nothing beats getting your hands dirty on the job.
