Hey folks! I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck in my backyard. I have a basic circular saw and a drill, but I'm wondering what other tools I should pick up. Any recommendations for a good miter saw or nail gun? Budget is around $300 for any new tools. Thanks!

Definitely get a compound miter saw for the deck boards and railings. For $300, look at the DeWalt DWS715 or a Ryobi if you're on a tight budget. Also don't forget PPE – safety glasses and ear pro! And a nail gun? Maybe a framing nailer if you're doing the structure, but for deck boards a good nail gun is overkill. I'd stick with screws for less squeaking.

I second the miter saw! I have the DeWalt sliding compound one and it's a beast. For $300 you could snag a good 12" sliding miter on sale. Also consider an impact driver – speeds up screwing deck boards way faster than a drill. And if you're doing stairs or railings, a jigsaw or oscillating tool helps for cuts.

Thanks for the tips! I think I'll go with a sliding miter saw and maybe an impact driver. SafetySteve, I hear you on the screws – I'll skip the nail gun. Any specific brand of screws you guys like for decks? I've seen ceramic coated ones mentioned.

Yeah, coated or stainless steel for pressure treated wood. Camo or GRK are great brands. Also don't forget a hole saw for any post holes if you're setting them in concrete. Good luck and post pics when done!
