Building a shed - what automotive tools do I really need?

Hey guys, planning to build a 12x16 shed from scratch. I've got the basics (hammer, saw, level) but wondering if I need any specialty automotive tools? I've seen people use impact wrenches for lag bolts and stuff. Should I invest in one? Also, any torque wrenches necessary? Thanks!

Great question! An impact wrench is a game-changer for driving long lag bolts into pressure-treated lumber. I'd recommend a cordless 1/2" impact with at least 300 ft-lbs of torque. Also, a good torque wrench is crucial if you're bolting together any structural brackets – don't want to over-tighten and strip threads. I always torque to spec. Also consider a ratchet set for tight spaces around the foundation. Where are you sourcing your plans?

Listen, for a shed you don't need to go crazy. An impact driver (not wrench) for deck screws is enough, and a regular socket set for bolts. I build sheds daily with just a Dewalt DCF887 impact driver and a Tekton socket set. Torque wrench is overkill unless you're doing some heavy structural connections. Save your money for a good circular saw and miter saw instead. But hey, if you want to feel like a pro, get the impact wrench.

I agree with CraftsmanChris, but if you plan on doing more projects later, an impact wrench is worth it. I use mine for everything from automotive work to building decks. For the shed, a 3/8" impact driver with hex bits handles 90% of fasteners. For big lag bolts, a 1/2" atomic impact is perfect. Also, a good set of combination wrenches never hurts. And don't forget a pneumatic stapler for sheathing – saves time. What's your budget?

Thanks all! My budget is maybe $200-300 for new tools. Sounds like an impact driver and a socket set will cover me. I'll skip the torque wrench for now. DeWaltDan, I'll look into the atomic impact. And yeah, I might rent a nail gun. Appreciate the advice!
