So I'm planning to build a heavy-duty workbench in my garage, mostly for working on my project car and maybe some woodworking. I've got a basic socket set but I know I'll need more. What tools do you guys recommend for pulling engines, suspension work, and maybe some welding prep? Budget is around $500 for the essential power tools.

Mate, if you're doing engine work you need a good impact wrench. I'm a Milwaukee guy through and through - their M18 Fuel 1/2" is a beast. Yeah you pay more but it lasts forever. For the workbench build itself, get a circular saw and a drill driver, but stick with the same battery system. Makita also makes solid stuff.

I gotta chime in here - DeWalt all the way! Atomic 20V impact is compact and powerful, plus their reciprocating saw is perfect for cutting suspension bolts. But for your budget, you could grab a combo kit with driver and recip saw. Also consider a portable bandsaw if you're cutting exhaust pipe, I got the Milwaukee one and it's a game changer.

You guys are missing the restoration aspect. For pulling engines, a good engine hoist and stand matter more than the power tools. I'd prioritize a 2-ton floor jack and stout jack stands before fancy impacts. Harbor Freight has a decent hoist for $200. But for power tools, get yourself a quality 4.5" angle grinder - I've restored three classics with my trusty Makita. Trust me, cutting rusted nuts and smoothing welds will save your sanity. And invest in a good wire cup brush too.

Thanks for the inputs! Steve, Dan, Wendy - lots to think about. I think I'll check out the Milwaukee or DeWalt impacts, and definitely grab that angle grinder, Wendy. I've got jack stands already, but a hoist might be out of budget for now. Appreciate the advice!
