Alright folks, I'm torn between the DeWalt DCF887 and the Makita XDT16 for my next impact driver. I do a lot of deck building and automotive work. I've heard the Makita has better control but DeWalt packs more torque. Anyone got hands-on experience with both? I need something that can lug nuts but also drive long screws without stripping.

Tim, I've got both in my collection. The Makita XDT16 is smoother for precise work, like interior trim or small fasteners. But for lug nuts and heavy duty, the DeWalt DCF887 has a bit more punch. However, if you're doing automotive, consider the impact wrench instead. The Makita XWT08 is a beast for lug nuts. Just my 2 cents.

I'm with Gary on this. For automotive, an impact wrench is the way to go. But between those two drivers, I'd lean Makita for the variable speed trigger and the assist mode - it really helps prevent overdriving. The DeWalt is great but feels a bit 'dumb' in comparison. Also, Makita's battery platform is lighter if you're carrying it all day.

Thanks guys. I already have a DeWalt impact wrench, so maybe I'll stick with the driver from the same family for battery compatibility. But the Makita's assist mode sounds sweet. Decisions, decisions...
