Hey guys, looking to get a new impact driver mainly for automotive stuff—removing lug nuts, suspension bolts, etc. I’m torn between the DeWalt 887 and Makita XDT16. I know both are great, but which one holds up better in a greasy garage? Any longtime users? I've heard Makita has better ergonomics but DeWalt has more torque. Thoughts?

I’m a contractor and use Makita on the job site every day. The XDT16 is a beast—plenty of torque for lug nuts, and the ergonomics are top notch. I’ve dropped mine off a ladder and it still works. For automotive, I’d go Makita because of the variable speed trigger control. But if you already have DeWalt batteries, stick with that.

Honestly, both are overkill for just car stuff lol. I’ve got the DeWalt 887 and it’s never struggled with any bolt on my F150. The key is battery life—if you’re using it for hours, both are fine. But I’d say the DeWalt feels more balanced when you’re reaching into tight engine bays.

Thanks guys. I have some DeWalt 20V batteries from my woodworking tools, so that might tip the scale. But I hear Makita’s warranty is better. Any experience with DeWalt's warranty on impacts?

DeWalt warranty is decent, but Makita’s is easier to deal with. If you already have DeWalt batts, just get the 887 and don’t look back. You won’t be disappointed. And if you break it, Dewalt’s service centers are everywhere.
