DeWalt vs Makita: Which Impact Wrench Reigns Supreme?

Alright folks, I'm in the market for a new 1/2-inch impact wrench. I've narrowed it down to the DeWalt DCF899 and the Makita XWT08Z. I've read all the spec sheets, but I want real-world opinions. I do a lot of heavy-duty work like suspension bolts and lug nuts. Which one has more torque and durability? Safety first, so I need something reliable.

I've been using the DCF899 for a year now, and it's a beast. Broke loose rusty bolts on my old truck that my old cordless couldn't touch. It's got that 700 ft-lbs of breakaway torque, and the brushless motor hasn't missed a beat. Just make sure you've got the 5Ah battery or bigger, else it drains fast. I'm a DeWalt guy, but I'll admit Makita makes solid tools too.

I own both, lol. I'm kinda a tool hoarder. For pure torque, the DeWalt edges out, but the Makita is lighter and more compact, which is a godsend when you're working in tight engine bays. Also, the Makita has a trigger with a bit more control for lighter tasks. But if I had to pick one for hardcore abuse, maybe the DeWalt. Just my two cents.

As a contractor, I've put thousands of cycles on the Makita XWT08Z. It's been solid, but I've seen more warranty claims on the Makita than on the DeWalt in my crew. That said, the DeWalt's hog ring anvil can get stuck sometimes – make sure you oil it. For raw power, DeWalt wins, but for all-day handling, I prefer the Makita. Honestly, you can't go wrong either way, but since you mentioned safety, check that the torque settings are calibrated – I've seen both brands have issues with that after a drop.
