Fresno City College: Solving the Tech Shortage or Just a Pipe Dream?

Just read this article about Fresno City College's program. Sounds promising but I've seen these 'quick fix' deals before. In my line of work, you can't beat experience. You can teach someone to use a torque wrench but it takes years to know when to trust it. Anyone else think this is just a band-aid?

I get what you're saying Hank, but honestly, we need something. My shop can't find anyone under 30 who knows how to change oil without a lift. If they can get them certified in a year and then they learn the ropes on the job, that's better than nothing. Plus, it gives kids a leg up without drowning in student debt. If the dealerships are willing to mentor and bump pay as they gain skills, maybe this works. Still, I've seen too many corners cut. They better have good instructors who've actually turned wrenches, not just read textbooks.
