Fresno College's New Auto Tech Program - Game Changer or Just Hype?

Just read this about Fresno City College tackling the tech shortage. Sounds like they're getting students certified before they even graduate. I'm all for practical training, but does it really prep them for real-world problems? My buddy's a mechanic and says book smarts only take you so far. Curious what you all think.

I've seen these programs come and go. The real issue is that techs need hands-on experience with a variety of vehicles, not just the ones in a classroom. When I was restoring my '67 Mustang, I learned more in a weekend than any course taught me. But if it gets more people interested in the trade, it's a start. Just hope they don't rely solely on that cert and skip the apprenticeship route.

Honestly, anything that brings new blood into the trade is a win. I collect tools and have seen the shortage firsthand – took my truck to three shops before one could even look at it. If these kids come out with a cert and some basic skills, they can learn the rest on the job. But they better be ready to get their hands dirty – I've met some 'certified' guys who can't even change a tire without instruction.
