Hey guys, newbie here trying to do some exhaust work on my truck. I've got an angle grinder with a metal cutting wheel attachment, need to cut some galvanized steel pipe. Watched a few YT vids but they all skip the safety stuff. What should I be wearing/doing to not lose a finger or get metal in my eye? This stuff seems sketchy.

Galvanized? Dude, you better have ventilation. That zinc coating releases nasty fumes when you cut it - can give you metal fume fever. I've seen guys get real sick breathing that in. Wear a respirator with P100 filters, NOT just a dust mask. Full face shield over safety glasses, leather gloves, and no loose clothing that can catch in the grinder. And for god's sake, clamp that pipe down - don't hold it with your hand.

Paul's right about the fumes. Also make sure you're using the right wheel - get a cutting disc rated for metal, not a grinding wheel. They look similar but cutting discs are thinner. Check for cracks before you start. And keep a fire extinguisher nearby, sparks can ignite stuff. Seen a guy's shop almost go up from sparks hitting some oily rags.

All good advice! I'll add - position yourself so if the wheel binds or kicks back, it won't hit you. Stand to the side, not in line with the rotation. And let the tool do the work - don't force it. Oh, and ear protection! Those grinders are loud enough to damage your hearing over time. Stay safe and post pics when you're done!
