My cordless vac won't charge - battery or charger?

Hey all, my cordless shop vac (a DeWalt 20V) just stopped charging. Plug it in, nothing happens - no light on the charger. I've had it for about 2 years, used it mostly for car interiors. I'm guessing it's the battery, but could it be the charger? Any way to tell before I drop $ on a new one?

Steve, I've been through this with several brands. First, check the contacts on the battery and charger - sometimes they get dirty or corroded. Clean them with a bit of rubbing alcohol on a q-tip. Also, try a different outlet. If that doesn't work, can you test the battery on another charger? Maybe borrow a buddy's. If it charges there, it's your charger. If not, it's the battery. Also, some batteries have a protection circuit that cuts off if they've been completely drained - sometimes you can 'jump' them, but that's risky. My guess is battery, though, especially after 2 years.

Honestly, DeWalt chargers are usually reliable, but I've seen the batteries give out. I'd say get a new battery - you can find them for a good price online. But if you want to be sure, some auto parts stores will test batteries for free. Also, check if your battery is under warranty - DeWalt has a 3-year warranty if I remember right. Might be worth a call.

Thanks guys. I'll try cleaning the contacts first. I don't have another charger to test with. I might just swing by the store and see if they can test it. If it's the battery, I'll pick up a new one. Appreciate the help!
