Hey guys, I just finished building some basement shelves and the dust & debris is everywhere. I need a good car vacuum to clean up the sawdust and small wood chips. I've got a small shop vac but it's too bulky. What's a good portable car vac that can handle dry mess and maybe some wet spills? Budget under $100.

For that price, look at the DeWalt DCV580. It's cordless, 20V, and has decent suction for a handheld. The HEPA filter is a plus for dust. Just don't expect it to replace a full shop vac for big jobs. Also, check out the Rigid WD4070 if you want something that can do wet/dry - but it's a bit over $100.

I've been using the Milwaukee 0880-20 for years. It's compact and fits in tight spots. The filter is washable which saves money. One tip: if you're sucking up fine dust, put a little water in the tank first to keep dust from blowing out. Been doing that since the 80s!

Make sure whatever you get has a proper dust bag or filter system. Fine wood dust is a respiratory hazard. I'd recommend the Festool CT MIDI if you can stretch your budget - it's pricey but the dust extraction is top-notch. For under $100, the Shop-Vac 9625400 is a solid wet/dry with a cartridge filter.

I'm a gearhead so I use the Armor All 2.5 Gallon Utility Vac. It's cheap, gets the job done, and I've sucked up everything from oily rags to wet leaves. The hose is short but the attachments are decent. For your basement, it'll handle sawdust no problem. Just empty it often.
