Hey folks, I'm planning to build a 12x12 ground-level deck. I need to notch 4x4 posts and cut 2x6 joists to length. I have a cheap electric chainsaw that struggles. Should I get a gas saw or a larger battery one? Budget around $300. Leaning towards Stihl or Husqvarna but open to suggestions.

I'd recommend a good battery saw for that kind of work. Quieter, no fumes, and plenty of power for notching. I use a Makita 36V (two 18V batteries) and it rips through PT lumber. But if you're cutting all day, gas might be better. For $300 you can get a decent Echo or Husqvarna gas saw.

If you already have a DeWalt battery system, get their 60V FlexVolt saw. I've got the 16-inch and it handles 4x4s like butter. Otherwise, go with a Stihl MS250 gas saw – bulletproof and easy to maintain. Notching with a chainsaw takes practice; I use a circular saw for the first cut then chainsaw to finish.

Agree on battery unless you're running all day. My Makita 36V never bogs down. For notching, a jigsaw might be safer. But if you're set on a chainsaw, go electric to avoid messing with mix and starting issues. Also, watch out for kickback when notching!

GET A STIHL. Period. I've got a MS170 for small jobs and a 391 for big ones. Both are tanks. For a deck, the 170 would be enough and it's under $200. No battery will match the power-to-weight ratio. Just use ethanol-free gas and you're golden.
