Hey everyone, I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck in my backyard. I need to cut some 6x6 posts and 2x10 joists, but also want to trim some branches overhead. I'm torn between a 16-inch and 18-inch bar. Any suggestions on a good chainsaw that won't break the bank but can handle this job? I've never owned one before.

For a deck project, I'd go with a 16-inch bar. Trust me, you dont need that extra length for deck lumber; it'll just add weight and tire you out faster. Look for a saw with at least 40cc if gas or a decent 40V electric. The Stihl MS250 is a solid choice - it's what I use for small framing jobs. Just make sure you get a chain sharpener too!

I second the 16-inch bar, but I'd suggest going with an electric for easier maintenance and less noise. The Makita XCU09PT1 (36V) is a beast - cuts like a gas saw but no mixing fuel. If you go gas, get one with an easy-start system. Also, for branch trimming get a lightweight polesaw attachment if you can, saves your shoulders.

I'm not a pro, but I built my shed with a Husqvarna 440 (16-inch). It did great on 2x6s and even handled some 8x8 beams with a few passes. Dont forget safety gear - chaps, helmet, and ear plugs! A tip: get a ripping chain if you plan to cut along the grain for your deck boards.
