Building a deck – what chainsaw should I get?

Hey all, I'm planning to build a 20x12 deck in my backyard this spring. I need a chainsaw for cutting some 4x4 and 2x6 lumber, plus maybe some firewood. I'm on a budget, so what's a good entry-level chainsaw that won't break the bank but can handle occasional use? Any recommendations?

If you're on a budget, look at the Poulan Pro or Echo. You don't need a pro saw for occasional deck work. A 16-18 inch bar is plenty. I've had a Poulan for 5 years and it starts every time. Just don't expect it to fell huge trees.

Honestly, for ANY chainsaw, you get what you pay for. I'm a contractor and I only trust Stihl. The MS 170 or MS 180 are entry-level but bulletproof. They cost a bit more upfront but will last years if you maintain them. I've seen cheap saws die after one season. Trust me, spend the extra $50.

I second the Stihl suggestion, but if you're strictly budget, Harbor Freight has a Chicago Electric saw that works if you're only doing a few cuts. But honestly, for a deck, you're not cutting that much. I'd get a corded electric saw – no fuel, no tuning, cheap. I have a DeWalt corded and it rips through 4x4s.

If you're not felling trees, electric is the way to go. But if you want portable, get a 40V battery model from Ryobi or Kobalt. They're quiet and no pull starts. I've got one and it's great for limbing and cutting posts. Just get a sharp chain and you'll be fine.
