Chainsaw prepping for storm outages? Avista article got me thinking...

Saw this article about Avista prepping for windstorm and thousands bracing for outages. Got me thinking—how many of you guys get your chainsaws ready before a big storm? I usually just make sure I got gas and oil mixed, but wondering if I should do more. What's your storm prep routine?

First thing I do is check the chain tension and sharpen it. Dull chain is useless when a tree's blocking your driveway. Also, make sure you got extra bar oil and a spare chain. And for the love of god, wear chaps and ear protection. I've seen too many guys in flip-flops after a storm. Not worth losing a toe.

As a pro, I keep two saws ready—one small for limbing and a bigger one for trunk work. Storm cleanup ain't the time to be fiddling with a finicky saw. Also, have a plan for where you'll stack the debris. And don't forget to check your fuel lines and spark plug. Ethanol gas can gum up carbs if it sits too long. I run non-ethanol in all my 2-stroke mix.

I'm probably overkill, but I torque my bar nuts to spec and keep a log of chain sharpening angles. Last storm, my neighbor's chain came off and almost hit him. Since then, I check tension before every use. Also, a sharp chain makes cleaner cuts and is actually safer. But don't forget to let the saw warm up before you bury it in a fallen oak. Oh, and keep a file handy for touch-ups.
