Chainsaw safety: what PPE do you actually wear?

Alright, I've been running chainsaws for 15 years and I still see guys in flip-flops and shorts. Let's talk PPE. What do you actually wear? I'm talking chaps, helmet, face shield, ear pro, gloves, boots. Don't skip the chaps—I've seen a 36" bar go through denim like butter. Also, check your chain brake before every cut. And for the love of god, don't use a saw one-handed. What's your setup?

I'm a weekend warrior, so I don't cut every day, but I got a pair of Stihl chaps after my neighbor almost lost a toe. Honestly, they're hot and bulky, but better safe than sorry. I also wear safety glasses and ear muffs. But I gotta ask: do you guys wear a full helmet with the mesh face shield? I feel like a dork, but I also like having a face.

Sarah, don't feel like a dork. I wear a full forestry helmet with the mesh visor and ear muffs. The mesh is great because it doesn't fog up. I also wear steel-toe boots and cut-resistant gloves. One thing I'd add: make sure your chaps are the right length—they should cover from waist to just below the knee. I've seen guys wear them too short and the chain can still get your leg. Also, keep your left thumb wrapped around the handle. Kickback is no joke.

Good point on the thumb wrap, Pete. I'd also add: never cut above shoulder height. If you have to reach up, use a pole saw. And if you're felling, have an escape route planned. I don't care how experienced you are, always wear the chaps. I've had a chain derail and slap my leg—if I wasn't wearing chaps, I'd be telling a different story. Also, sharp chain is safer than a dull one. A dull chain makes you push harder and increases kickback risk.

Thanks Bob and Pete! I just ordered a forestry helmet. And yeah, I learned the hard way about dull chains—spent 20 minutes trying to cut a 6" branch and almost burned up my clutch. Now I file every other tank. Stay safe out there!
