Hey everyone, just had a close call. Was cutting up a fallen oak in my backyard, chain caught a branch and kicked back. My new chaps stopped the chain before it hit my leg. Seriously, if you're not wearing chaps, get some. Any of you guys have a similar story or recommendations for good PPE?

Glad you're okay Paul! Chaps are a must. I wear the Husqvarna technical chaps. They're a bit pricey but the fit is great and they have a nice high waist. Also, don't forget a good helmet with mesh visor and ear muffs. I see so many guys skipping the helmet. Eye pro too - got a piece of bark in my eye once, never again.

Paul, you got lucky. I've been cutting for 20 years and I've had two kicks that hit my chaps. Wear them every time, no exceptions. Also, make sure your chain is sharp and you're not forcing the cut. And Sam's right about the helmet - I use a Petzl with integrated muffs. One thing I'd add: check your chaps for damage after each use. If they're cut through to the inner layers, they need replacing.

Thanks guys. Sam, I've got the Stihl chaps, they're okay but a bit bulky. Carl, good tip about inspecting them. I'll check mine tonight. Also, what about gloves? I've been using cheapo leather ones but thinking about upgrading.

Gloves: I prefer the mechanix with reinforced knuckles. Good grip, not too hot. But for chainsaw work, you need cut-resistant gloves. Some guys use the Stihl ones with Kevlar. I'd say get a pair with a high cut level rating. And never wear loose-fitting gloves - they can get caught.
