Need a chainsaw for building a deck - which one?

Hey guys, I'm about to start building a big deck (16x20) and I need a chainsaw to cut the lumber and maybe some posts. I'm on a tight budget, so I don't want to spend a fortune. Any recommendations for a cheap but reliable chainsaw? I've seen some electric ones for like $80 at Harbor Freight, are those any good? Thanks!

Carl, for a deck that size, you're gonna be cutting a lot of lumber. A cheap electric chainsaw might bog down and overheat. I'd recommend a gas-powered saw with at least a 16" bar. Stihl MS 170 or Husqvarna 240 are good entry-level saws. They'll run you around $200 but will last. Also, make sure you get chaps and eye protection. Safety first!

Bob's right about safety, but I gotta say, for deck building, a circular saw is way more precise. Chainsaws are for trees, not dimensional lumber. If you insist on a chainsaw, get one with a sharp chain and low kickback. But seriously, a circular saw will give you cleaner cuts and less tear-out. Just my two cents.

I agree with Paul. I've built dozens of decks and never used a chainsaw for cutting boards. A circular saw with a good blade is the way to go. But if you're also clearing trees or cutting posts, a chainsaw can help. For budget, check out the Echo CS-310. It's lightweight and reliable. But don't skimp on safety gear.
