PSA: Don't Forget Your Chaps! A Close Call

Hey all, just had a scary moment with my saw today. Was clearing some branches and my foot slipped, chain caught my pant leg. Luckily it was just a tear and no injury, but I was NOT wearing my chaps. I always think they're a hassle, but now I'm ordering a pair. Seriously, don't be like me. Wear your PPE, especially chaps. They're cheap compared to a hospital visit.

Good reminder, Dave. I never run a saw without full kit: chaps, helmet with mesh, gloves, steel-toe boots. The chaps have saved me twice. Once a kickback sent the bar right into my thigh - thechaps stopped it dead. Also, check the fit - they should be snug but not restrictive. And make sure they meet the ANSI standard. Not all chaps are equal. I've seen cheap ones that don't have enough layers.

What Larry said. Also, remember to check your chain tension and brake before each use. A loose chain can cause kickback. And never cut above shoulder height. But yes, chaps are a must. I work in a shop, and we had a guy refuse to wear them once - he ended up with a trip to the ER after a kickback to the leg. Not pretty. Dave, glad you're ok. And for anyone on a budget, you can find decent chaps for under $50. Better than the co-pay.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I'm ordering a pair of the ones with the orange stripes - they look like the ones the pros use. Also, I'm gonna start checking the brake every time. I never even thought about that. Appreciate the advice.
