Recommend a Chainsaw for a Deck Build?

Hey all! I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck in my backyard this spring. I need to cut some pressure-treated lumber, maybe some 6x6 posts, and trim a few branches. I've never owned a chainsaw before. What should I look for? I'm on a budget but don't want junk. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum! For a deck build, you'll want something with enough power to rip through those 6x6s. I'd suggest a 16-18 inch bar, 40-50cc gas saw. If you're not cutting big trees, you don't need a monster. Look at Echo or Husqvarna for reliability. Don't go cheap on a no-name brand, you'll regret it.

@FirstTimeDeckGuy, if you're not experienced, I'd actually recommend an electric chainsaw for that work. I use a DeWalt 60V for small stuff like that – no fumes, easy start, and plenty of power for deck lumber. Unless you're cutting all day, battery is fine. Plus, no bar oil mixing or tuning carburetors. Keep it simple.

I've been a carpenter for 40 years. For a deck, you don't need a huge saw. And honestly, a circular saw with a good blade will do most of your deck framing cuts more accurately. A chainsaw is for the rough stuff – like trimming those posts to height. If you get a gas saw, get one with a good anti-vibration system, your hands will thank you after a long day. I'd go with a Husky 450 Rancher, but that might be overkill. A 16 inch is fine.
