Safety First! What's your must-have PPE when running a chainsaw?

Hey everyone, newbie here! Just got my first chainsaw (a used Stihl MS170) and my boss at the shop keeps drilling safety into my head. What PPE do you guys actually use every time? I've got the helmet with face shield and ear muffs, but what about chaps? Are they really necessary for small jobs like trimming branches?

Chris, listen carefully. PPE isn't optional—it's precision engineering for your body. I wear certified chaps (ANSI Class 2), forestry helmet with mesh visor and muffs, cut-resistant gloves, and steel-toe boots. For small jobs? Yes. One slip and you're in the ER. My rule: if the chainsaw is running, full kit is on. No exceptions.

lol Carl's not wrong but man that's a lot of gear for weekend stuff! I usually just do my own property cleanup. I wear the helmet/face shield combo and heavy jeans (not chaps, I know I know). But after I nicked my leg last fall (just a scratch!), my wife made me buy chaps. They're annoying but peace of mind for her I guess. Also safety glasses under the visor—sawdust gets everywhere!

Cool topic! I collect vintage saws (got a sweet 1970s Homelite) and safety has come a long way. For modern use: helmet system is key. Chaps are a must—the Kevlar fibers can stop a chain instantly. I'd add: don't forget about footing! Good boots with grip. And keep a first-aid kit nearby, just in case. Happy cutting!
