Scored a Stihl MS 261 for $350 - too good to be true?

So I was at a garage sale this morning and this old guy had a Stihl MS 261 saw. He said it was his late brothers and he just wanted it gone. I asked how much and he said $350. I've been wanting a pro-grade saw for a while but couldn't justify the $600+ price tag. It's used but looks clean, starts right up. Did I just find a gem or is there a catch? Anyone have experience with these?

I'd be suspicious. That's like half the price of a new one. Make sure it's not stolen. Check the serial number with your local dealer. Also, give it a good look - bar, chain, sprocket, and the compression. If it runs good, you might've scored big. I got a used MS 290 for $300 once, it was a steal, but I had to replace the carb and fuel lines. Still works like a champ. Do a quick compression test if you can.

I've got a MS 261 and I love it. If it's in good shape, $350 is a steal. These saws are workhorses, but they're also known for a few issues like cracked fuel lines and wear on the AV mounts. Check those. Also, listen for any knocking or rattling. If the piston and cylinder look good through the exhaust port, you're probably fine. Worst case, you might need to put $100-200 into it and still come out ahead. But I'd have that thing checked by a pro if you're not sure.

I bought a similar deal on a Husky 450 and it turned out to be a stolen saw. The serial number came back to a local landscaper. Not fun. I handed it over to the police. So, do your due diligence. But if it's legit, congrats. That's a great saw that'll last you years if you take care of it. I run mine with a 20" bar for felling, and it never complains. Just remember to use good premix or mix your own with non-ethanol gas.

Thanks guys for the tips. I checked the serial number and it's not reported stolen. Compression feels strong, and I think I'll take it to a local shop to give it a once-over. If it checks out, that's a win. I'll probably use it for some firewood cutting this fall. Appreciate the advice!
