Storm Prep: Chainsaw Check?

Just saw this article about upcoming windstorm. Thousands could lose power. I know some of you are into chainsaws for storm cleanup. What's your go-to setup when a storm hits? I'm thinking about getting a new saw, but not sure what to prioritize. Thoughts?

Well, if you're serious about storm prep, you need a saw that's reliable and easy to start. I've got a Husqvarna 460 with a 24" bar, but honestly, it's overkill for most home use. For downed limbs, a good 18" bar is plenty. Most important: keep your chain sharp! I sharpen after every tank of gas. And always have extra chains, bar oil, and mixed fuel ready. Don't be that guy with a dull chain when the power's out.

Budget matters. You don't need a pro-level saw unless you're a logger. I got a cheap electric chainsaw from Harbor Freight for $80, works fine for clearing small stuff. But for a big storm, maybe a gas saw is better. Just saying, don't break the bank. Also, check out used saws on Craigslist – can find deals if you know what to look for.

I'm with Dan on the Husky, but I'm a Stihl man myself. MS 261 is my baby – starts every time, even after sitting. But honestly, the brand matters less than maintenance. I've seen people with $800 saws that can't cut because they neglect the chain. So, either way, learn to sharpen and keep spare parts. And always have a good axe and wedges for when you get pinched.
