Storm Prep with Chainsaws: Avista Windstorm Article

Just read this article from Avista about prepping for a windstorm. They're talking about potential power outages and having trees cleared. I've got a trusty Stihl MS 261, but I'm wondering if you guys have any tips for storm cleanup? I usually just cut up fallen limbs, but sometimes I get nervous about trees that are leaning or partially uprooted. Any advice?

And when dealing with leaning trees, never cut the side under tension first – it'll kick back. Use the 'bore cut' technique if you know it. Also, keep a clear escape path. Totally agree. I had a buddy who tried to take down a partially uprooted tree after a storm. It shifted and crushed his leg. Lucky he didn't lose it. I always keep a winch and some straps in my truck for pulling trees in the direction I want them to fall. Also, don't forget your PPE – chaps, helmet, and steel-toe boots are a must when it's windy.

As for winch straps, I use a simple tree saver strap looped around the base to avoid damaging the bark. And always make sure the winch is rated for the load.
