Just read this article about Randy Roberts, the 'Summer Mayor' of Teton Pass. Dude's been a volunteer backcountry ambassador for 15+ years. They call him a 'hybrid' volunteer - part trail maintainer, part safety patrol. What do y'all think about these hybrid volunteer roles in the outdoor/winter sports scene?

Sounds like a great way to save money on hiring staff! Volunteers are the backbone of a lot of trail systems. But hybrids? That's just a fancy word for someone who does two jobs. Hope they get some gear or gas money at least.

Randy's the real deal. I've been on Teton Pass in winter - that road is no joke. Hybrid volunteer or not, keeping those trails safe and passable takes serious skill. I bet he's got a mean chainsaw for clearing blowdowns. Props to him.

Bet he uses Stihl gear. Can't be messing around with cheap stuff in that backcountry. Hybrid role means he probably carries a chainsaw AND a first aid kit. Smart. Wish more parks had dedicated volunteers like that.

Is there a chainsaw angle here? Or just general volunteerism? Either way, good for him. I do similar stuff on local bike trails. It's a workout, but beats paying for a gym membership. Need to keep an eye on my bar oil usage though.
