Building a Deck - What Drill Should I Get?

Hey everyone, I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck in my backyard this summer. I need to buy a drill, but I'm on a budget. I'll be drilling through pressure-treated lumber and maybe some composite decking. Should I get a cordless or corded? Any recommendations under $150?

Cordless all the way, Dan. I've been using the DeWalt 20V MAX XR for years, it's a beast. It's a bit over $150 but worth it. You'll get a kit with a charger and two batteries, so you can keep working. Trust me, you don't want to mess with a cord when you're on a ladder.

I second cordless, but if you're on a budget, check out the Ryobi One+ 18V. It's cheap and they have a ton of tools in the same battery platform. I've built a whole shed with mine. Plus, you can get a impact driver combo for around $99 on sale. That's the real MVP for deck screws.

I'll throw in a vote for a corded drill. I know, it's not as cool, but for repetitive drilling, you can't beat the power and it never runs out of juice. I've got a Makita 1/2" corded that's older than me and still works. For $80, you can get a solid one and spend the rest on good bits.

Honestly, for a deck, you'll want a driver more than a drill. I use my impact driver for all the screws, and my drill for pilot holes. If you're only getting one, get a drill with a clutch and a hammer function, but if you can splurge, get a combo kit. I got a Ridgid combo with a lifetime battery warranty, but I think they're a bit pricey now.
