Deck building - what drill bits and driver do I need?

Hey all, I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck next weekend. I've got a basic cordless drill but I'm not sure if it's gonna cut it for screwing down all those deck boards. What kind of drill/driver and bits should I get? I don't want to spend a fortune but I want it to last.

For a deck, you're gonna want a good impact driver, not just a regular drill. The impact driver will save your wrist and make quick work of those screws. I'd recommend a brushless 18V or 20V one, like the DeWalt DCF887 or Milwaukee M18. As for bits, get a set of hex shank drill bits and some #2 square drive or star drive bits (Robertson or Torx). Wood decking screws with star drive are the way to go - less cam-out. Also, get a countersink bit for the pilot holes if you're using composite.

Absolutely, impact driver is a game changer. But don't forget about a good set of wood drill bits for pilot holes. You don't want to split the wood. I've been using a Bosch set I got off Amazon, works great. Also, consider a drill/driver combo kit if you're starting from scratch - you'll get both. And maybe grab a spare battery, especially when it's cold out, batteries drain fast.

From a pro standpoint, I'd say invest in a decent impact driver and a 1/4" hex impact rated screwdriver bit set. For deck screws, I prefer self-tapping screws that don't need pilot holes, saves time. But if you're using traditional screws, pilot holes are a must. Also, make sure your drill has a clutch - you don't want to overdrive the screws and strip them. And buy quality screws - the cheap ones strip easily and rust. I've had good luck with Simpson Strong-Tie and GRK. Good luck with the deck!

Thanks guys, this is super helpful. I think I'll get a brushless impact driver and some starter bits. I'm leaning towards the Ryobi HP - good price and I can get it at Home Depot. Any thoughts on that? Also, do I need a regular drill for anything on a deck, or can the impact driver do it all?
