DeWalt or Makita for a New Cordless Drill?

Hey all, I'm looking to get my first cordless drill and I'm stuck between the DeWalt 20V MAX XR and the Makita 18V LXT. I'll be doing light framing, deck work, and some cabinet installs. I've heard good things about both, but I want to hear from folks who've actually used them. Which one would you pick and why?

Pete, I've been using the DeWalt 20V XR for about 3 years now for weekend projects and it's been solid. The chuck is metal, so it's durable, and the battery lasts a good long time. I've dropped it off a ladder once and it still works fine. My buddy has the Makita and it feels a bit lighter, but honestly, both are great. For the price, DeWalt is a little cheaper, so that's what I'd go with if you're on a budget.

I've been a carpenter for 30+ years and I've used both extensively. The Makita is my preference because the grip is more comfortable for all-day use, and the power-to-weight ratio is better. The 18V LXT batteries are also backwards compatible with their older tools, which is nice if you expand your kit. But honestly, you can't go wrong with either. If you're going to be doing a lot of overhead work, the Makita will be easier on your arms.

I'm a plumber, so I'm usually in tight spaces and need precision. I've got the DeWalt and the chuck is super precise, and the clutch settings are spot-on. But I've also used the Makita and the speed control is smoother. If you can, go to a store and hold both – that'll tell you a lot. Also, think about what other tools you might get later; the battery system is a big deal. I went with DeWalt because they had a kit deal with a driver and batteries for a good price.
