Drill battery not charging - any ideas?

Hey all, my trusty old 18V drill just stopped charging. I've had it for years, always worked fine. Plug it in, charger light stays green, but no charge. Battery is the original, but I've taken care of it. Is it just time for a new battery, or could it be the charger? Any tips?

Had that happen with my old set. First thing, check the charger with another battery if you can. If that works, it's the battery. If not, could be the charger. But honestly, if it's an old NiCd battery, it might just be dead. Time to upgrade to a brushless brushless model with lithium ion. I've been using a 20V brushless for a while now, night and day difference.

Before you ditch it, try cleaning the contacts on the battery and the charger. I've had that fix it before. Use some electrical contact cleaner and a pencil eraser on the metal strips. Sometimes they just get gunked up. Also, check if the battery is actually seating properly - sometimes they don't click in all the way.

I'm with Carl on this one. If it's an old battery, especially NiCd, they have a limited life. But if you're not ready to upgrade, you can often find compatible aftermarket batteries that are cheaper. Just make sure they're from a reputable brand and have good reviews. I've had luck with that for older tools. Also, some chargers have a 'refresh' mode that can revive tired batteries - check your manual.
