Drill Recommendations for Building a Deck?

Hey all, I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck in my backyard. I need a drill that can handle lag screws and decking screws without bogging down. I already have a corded drill that's ok, but I want to go cordless for convenience. Any recommendations? Budget is around $200-$300 for a kit.

For a deck, you want something with serious torque. A brushless drill/driver combo is the way to go. I'd look at the Makita XFD131 (brushless 18V) or the newer XFD17. They'll power through lag screws all day. If you're set on one tool, get a hammer drill/driver combo, but for a deck, you really need an impact driver for the screws. I'd pick up a drill and impact combo kit – you'll thank me later.

I built a shed last summer with a DeWalt 20V Max combo kit (DCD791 drill + DCF887 impact). It handled everything – from pilot holes to driving 3/8" lag bolts. The drill has plenty of torque, and the impact driver is a beast. Also, get extra batteries and a fast charger – you'll go through them. And don't forget a good set of spade bits and a hex shank adaptor for the impact.

I'm a big fan of the Milwaukee M18 Fuel set! The drill has a metal chuck and the impact drive is super strong. I just used it to build a small pergola, and it never stalled. Plus, the set comes with two 5.0 batteries, which is great. Whatever you choose, make sure to use the right screws – coated deck screws are best for outdoors. Happy building!

Thanks all! I'm leaning towards the Makita combo since I heard good things about their ergonomics. But I'll check out the others too. Any tips for drilling straight holes for the deck posts? I'm a bit nervous about that part.
