Hey all, was browsing a local clearance outlet and saw a DeWalt DCD996 brushless hammer drill for $89! Box was a bit beat up but tool looked new. Is this a good buy? I'm just a hobbyist woodworker, do I need something that beefy?

For $89 that's a steal. Those are usually $250+. Even if it's a return or refurb, that price is hard to beat. I'd grab it before someone else does. It's overkill for basic woodworking, but you'll never struggle with anything. I use mine for everything from cabinets to drilling concrete anchors. Just check it spins straight and the chuck is true before you buy.

I got the same model from a pawn shop for $75 a couple years back, still running strong. BUT double check it's not a counterfeit – some knockoffs floating around. Also, if the box is damaged, make sure all the accessories are there (side handle, belt hook, battery if included?). If it's bare tool, factor in battery cost. But yeah, if it's legit, that's a workhorse. I restored a whole Victorian porch with mine.

Great drill, but be aware it's heavy and the brushless motor can be jerky at low speeds if you're doing delicate work. For drilling holes in wood studs or even metal it's fine, but if you drive screws a lot, you might want a separate impact driver. That said, $89 is a killer price. Just check the runout – if the chuck has more than 0.002 inch wobble, I'd pass. Otherwise, congrats on the find!
