PSA: Don't skip the safety glasses when using your drill

Hey folks, just a friendly reminder from a guy who learned the hard way. Yesterday I was drilling into some old concrete without my safety glasses, and a chip flew right into my eye. Luckily it was just a scratch, but it could've been way worse. Trust me, it's not worth it. Always wear your PPE, especially when drilling. Anyone else have a close call?

Amen to that, Mike. I've been in the trade for 20 years and I've seen too many guys lose vision or get seriously injured because they were lazy with safety. I always wear full face shield when I'm drilling overhead or into masonry. And don't forget ear protection too, those drills can be loud. Stay safe out there.

Thanks for the tip! I'm still an apprentice and sometimes I get so caught up in the job that I forget the basics. I'll definitely be more careful. Quick question: do you guys prefer safety glasses or a face shield for regular drilling? I find glasses fog up on me sometimes.

Good question, Sparky. For most drilling, I use anti-fog safety glasses. But for heavy stuff like overhead drilling or when there's a lot of dust, I switch to a full face shield. You can get them with a respirator built in if you're dealing with concrete dust. The fogging is annoying, but there are anti-fog wipes that help.

And don't forget to check your glasses for cracks or scratches. Damaged PPE is almost as bad as no PPE. Also, make sure they fit well so they don't slip when you're moving around. Trust me, it's a pain to readjust when you're holding a drill overhead.
