Deck build - impact driver or drill/driver for framing?

Hey guys, starting a 12x16 pressure treated deck next weekend. I've got a cheapo drill/driver that struggles with the 3/8" lag bolts. Should I invest in an impact driver for the framing and ledger? My budget is ~$150. I also need to cut everything – thinking circular saw ok? Any tips appreciated!

For framing, get an impact driver - no question. The concussive force sinks lags like butter. I'd recommend a brushless model with at least 1500 in-lbs of torque. At $150 you can get a Dewalt DCF887 or Milwaukee M18 Fuel on sale. Also, get a speed square and a chalk line for layout - accuracy now saves headaches later.

^^ what Chris said. But don't overlook a decent circ saw too. A 15-amp corded one will outcut any battery saw on treated lumber. For impacts, I run a 20V MAX XR – it's a beast. Also, pick up a set of impact-rated driver bits; cheap ones snap off. And grab a nut driver set for ledger lock washers.

Thanks for the advice! I was leaning impact driver but wasn't sure. I'll look for a combo kit with a circ saw if the budget allows. One more thing – I'm planning to use deck screws (like the star drive) for the decking. Is it worth getting a dedicated screw gun, or will the impact work?

Impact works fine for deck screws, but get a depth control nose piece if you don't want to overdrive. A screw gun is faster for production but overkill for one deck. Just set your impact on speed 1 (low) for screws – prevents stripping. And pre-drill for the last 6 inches of the board to avoid splits.
