Deck build - what driver should I get?

Hey folks, I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck in my backyard this spring. I'm a complete newbie and I've been reading up on tools. I need a good driver for the deck screws and maybe some framing. I don't want to spend a fortune, but I want something reliable. Any recommendations? Corded or cordless?

If you're on a budget, grab a corded drill/driver combo. You'll get more torque and no battery to worry about. I've been using a $40 corded drill from Harbor Freight for years, it's still going strong. For deck screws, you don't need top-of-the-line. Just make sure it has a clutch so you don't strip the heads.

I'd disagree with corded for a deck. You'll be moving around a lot, and a cord is a pain. Get a cordless 18V or 20V (max) with a good battery. Look for one with a brushless motor - they last longer and have better torque. I like the DeWalt DCF887 or the Makita XDT16. They're a bit pricey, but you'll thank me later when you're driving hundreds of screws.

Will's got the right idea. I'm a contractor, and we use cordless exclusively for decks. The Milwaukee M18 Fuel impact driver is my go-to. It's got plenty of power and the batteries last. But for a DIY project, you don't need the big brands. Look at the Ryobi or Ridgid lines - they're cheaper and still decent. Just get a brushless if you can.

One thing nobody's mentioned: consider an impact driver vs a drill. An impact driver is better for driving long screws into wood – it has less torque on the wrist and more driving power. But if you're also drilling pilot holes, you'll need a drill. A lot of kits come with both. Since you're building a deck, you'll want both. I'd get a combo kit with a drill and impact driver. Check out the deals at Home Depot or Lowe's – you can find a cheap combo for under $100.
