Deck building - impact driver recommendation?

Hey all, planning to build a 12x16 deck this summer. I need to drive a ton of 3" deck screws into pressure-treated lumber. My old drill just can't handle it. Should I get an impact driver? Any recommendations for a good one that won't break the bank? Thanks!

Bob, absolutely get an impact driver. It's a game changer for deck screws. I've built sheds and a bunch of furniture with mine. Personally, I love the Makita XDT13 - it's compact, powerful, and hasn't let me down. But if you're on a budget, the Ryobi P238 is solid for the price. Just get a good set of hex bits too, they wear out.

I second the impact driver idea. Also, consider getting one with a brushless motor - more efficient and lighter. I use a DeWalt DCF887, which is pricey but worth it for my landscape projects. If you're just doing one deck, maybe rent one from Home Depot? But owning is nice for future projects.

Hey Bob, one tip: get an impact driver AND a good set of Torx or star drive screws. They don't cam out like Phillips, and the impact driver will zip them in without stripping. I used a Milwaukee M18 Fuel on my deck, and it was smooth sailing. Just make sure to get the right size bits and a magnetic bit holder so you don't drop screws.
