Hey guys, starting a 12x16 deck next weekend. I have a cheap cordless drill but thinking about getting a dedicated impact driver for the lag screws and decking screws. Should I also get a new drill/driver for pilot holes? Or just one tool? Budget is around $200 for 2 tools if possible. Thanks!

Go with a brushless impact driver and a separate drill. For your budget, you can get the DeWalt DCF887 impact ($130) and a basic DeWalt drill like DCD771 ($100). The impact will save you time on those 3-inch deck screws. But make sure you get some good hex bits too, not the cheap ones that strip.

I agree with DrillMaster. Also, if you're doing ledger board and carrying heavy loads, the impact driver makes a huge difference. I've used a Makita XDT16 for years on decks. Don't forget to pre-drill for decking screws near the edges to avoid splitting.

Don't overlook a good hammer drill for concrete anchors if you're attaching to a house. But for the deck itself, what they said. I'd add that you can find combo kits on sale for around $180-200. Check out the Ridgid 18v combo if you're near a Home Depot. Those things are tough and come with a lifetime warranty.

Appreciate the tips! I'll look into that Ridgid combo, sounds like a good deal. And yeah, I'll definitely pre-drill for the decking screws. Thanks all!
