Hey all, I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck this spring. I need a good impact driver for the screws and maybe some light drilling. Budget is tight - under $100 if possible. I'm not a pro, just a weekend warrior. Any recommendations?

For under $100, check out the Ryobi P238. It's got decent power, good for deck screws, and the batteries work with other Ryobi tools if you expand. I've used mine for similar projects and it holds up. Just make sure to get the brushless version if you can.

Ryobi is fine for occasional use, but if you want something that'll last through multiple projects, save up a bit more and get the Makita XDT16Z. It's around $120 bare tool, but worth every penny. I restore old furniture and it handles everything from softwoods to hardwoods. Plus, the ergonomics are top-notch.

Before you buy anything, think about safety. A good clutch prevents overdriving and stripping screws. If you go cheap, you might end up with stripped heads and a lot of frustration. Also, wear safety glasses - I've seen too many screw shards fly. For $100, the DeWalt DCF787 is on sale sometimes - good balance of price and safety features.

Thanks guys. I think I'll look into the Ryobi and see if I can stretch for the Makita. Safety glasses are a given - I've had one too many close calls already. Bob, is the DeWalt you mentioned brushless? I hear that's more efficient.
