Hey guys, first time posting here. My DEWALT DCD777C2 drill started making a grinding noise when I pull the trigger and now the battery won't charge at all. It's about 2 years old. Any ideas?

Classic symptoms of a blown MOSFET or maybe a dead cell in the battery pack. If the battery won't charge, it's likely the BMS detected a fault. Check the battery contacts for corrosion, and if you have a multimeter, test voltage across the terminals. For the grinding noise, could be a gear stripped or the clutch mechanism. Pop the chuck off and see if it's the gearbox.

Yep, what Will said. Also, if the battery is swollen at all, toss it. DEWALT batteries have a recall on some models. Check your serial number. For the noise, before you tear it apart, try blowing out the vents with compressed air. Sometimes sawdust jams the fan blades and makes a racket.

I'm more on the landscaping side, but I've seen this with drills left in damp sheds. If the grinding is intermittent, maybe it's just the chuck needing a clean. Take the chuck off, wipe the threads, and reattach. For the battery, sometimes you can jump-start a dead li-ion pack, but I don't recommend it unless you know what you're doing. Could be a fire hazard.

Good point Victor, moisture could be the culprit. OP, if the smell like burnt electronics, stop using it. Check the brushes if it's brushed motor, but yours is brushless so it's probably a driver board. Post a pic of the battery contacts and the drill label.
