Hey everyone! I'm a weekend warrior looking to upgrade my old impact driver. I've been reading reviews and it's a toss-up between the DeWalt 887 and Makita XDT16. I don't need top-tier power, just something reliable for furniture assembly and occasional deck work. Budget matters, but I can stretch if it's worth it. What's your take?

DeWalt all the way, Sarah! I've been in the trades 20 years, and my DeWalt impacts have never let me down. The 887 is a beast, and if you ever get into heavier stuff, it'll handle it. Plus, DeWalt's warranty and service are top-notch. Don't overthink it, just go with the yellow.

I get what Felix is saying, but as a fellow DIYer with a tight budget, I'd look at the Makita if you can find a deal. The XDT16 has great reviews and is lighter, which helps when you're on a ladder or doing overhead work. I've used both, and honestly, for your projects, you won't notice a difference in power. Save some cash and get a couple of extra batteries with the savings.

I've restored a ton of old tools, and both brands are solid. But here's a tip: think about the whole system. If you already have batteries from one brand, lean that way. If not, check which brand has better combo deals or more tools you'll want later. Also, feel the grip in person – they're different ergonomically. Don't just buy on specs; buy what feels good. I personally prefer the DeWalt's balance.

Thanks everyone! I hadn't thought about the battery ecosystem, Dan. I do have a Makita drill already, so maybe sticking with Makita makes sense. And Bob's right, lighter is nicer for me. I'll test them in store and see if I can snag a deal. Appreciate the input!
