Alright folks, I'm in the market for a new 18V impact driver. I've been using a Ryobi for years but it's finally giving up. I'm torn between the DeWalt DCF887 and the Makita XDT16. I do a lot of deck building and framing. Which one's got more torque and durability? I've heard mixed reviews.

First thing, always wear safety glasses and gloves when testing these. But to answer: I've used both on job sites. The DeWalt DCF887 has that 3-speed control and precise trigger, but I've seen some guys burn them out after heavy use. The Makita XDT16 is a tank—less vibration and better build quality. I'd go Makita for longevity, but DeWalt if you want the latest gimmicks.

Retired carpenter here. I've been swinging tools for 40 years. My Makitas are still running after 15 years of abuse. The XDT16 has that assist mode that helps prevent cam-out. DeWalt's fine for occasional use, but if you're framing every day, Makita is the way. Plus the ergonomics are better for your wrists. Trust me, you'll thank me when you're my age.

I have both on my bench. Let me give you the specs: DeWalt 887 gives 1825 in-lbs max, Makita XDT16 is 1600 in-lbs but more consistent torque delivery. DeWalt has a quicker collet but Makita's is tighter zero-cam. Also, Makita's variable speed trigger is more precise for smaller fasteners. If you're doing structural work, the extra torque of DeWalt might help, but for precision, Makita wins. Check out Project Farm's comparison on YouTube.
