Hey folks, I've been using my new impact driver a lot lately and the noise is really getting to me. I tried some cheap foam earplugs but they fall out when I'm working. What do you guys use? I'm worried about hearing loss down the line.

Bob, you absolutely need proper hearing protection. I use custom molded plugs from the audiologist – cost a bit but perfect fit. For DIY, try 3M Peltor Optime 105 over-ears. They have a high NRR and don't interfere with glasses. Foam plugs are junk if not inserted correctly – roll them tight, pull your ear up, and hold until they expand.

On roofs all day with impacts. I use Howard Leight by Honeywell - the ones with the cord. They stay in and are comfortable under a hard hat. Also got a pair of ISOtunes Bluetooth earmuffs for music – they block out the tool noise but let me hear podcasts. Might be overkill for you but worth it.

Thanks guys. I'll look into those. Tim, I tried the roll method but maybe I'm not doing it right. Paul, do those ISOtunes actually block impact noise well? I'd love to listen to tunes while working.

Yeah Bob, they have a NRR of 27 dB. I can barely hear the impact when driving screws, but music comes through clear. Just don't crank it too loud or you defeat the purpose. I've had mine for two years – battery lasts all week.
