Best driver for deck screws? My Ryobi impact just stripped a bunch!

Hey folks, I'm building a cedar deck and hitting a snag. My Ryobi impact driver keeps stripping the heads of these 3-inch deck screws when I sink them into the joists. Tried adjusting the torque setting but it's either too weak or strips 'em. Should I switch to a drill driver instead, or just get a better impact? Using coated screws if that matters. Thanks!

Steve, ditch the Ryobi for deck work, man. Those things are fine for drywall but not for real lumber. Get yourself a Milwaukee M18 Fuel impact driver - I've sunk thousands of screws with mine and never stripped one. Also, make sure you're using the right bit; a #2 square drive is best for deck screws. If you're on a budget, even a DeWalt would be a step up.

Oh I feel your pain! I tried using my husband's old impact for a shed base last year and same thing happened. BeamBetty's right about the bit - I switched to a fresh impact-rated bit and it helped a lot. But honestly, for decking I ended up borrowing a neighbor's Makita drill driver and it was way easier to control. Less wrist strain too! Maybe try that before buying new?

Thanks both! Betty, that Milwaukee is pricey but I've heard good things. Debbie, good call on the bits - I was using a worn one, oops. Think I'll grab a new bit set and try my old corded drill first. If that doesn't work, might have to upgrade. Appreciate the help!
