Need advice on best drill/driver for building a deck - cordless vs corded?

Hey guys, I'm building my first deck and I'm at the point where I need to drill pilot holes and drive screws for the joists and decking. I've been using my old corded drill but it's a pain dragging the extension cord around. Should I invest in a cordless drill/driver combo? If so, which brand? I've heard Milwaukee and DeWalt are good but I'm on a budget. Also, what voltage should I look for - 12V, 18V, or 20V? Thanks!

Matt, for deck building you want power and runtime. Cordless is the way to go - no question. Get an 18V or 20V brushless combo kit (drill + impact driver). Milwaukee Fuel or DeWalt XR. The impact driver will save your wrist when driving 3" screws all day. Buy once, cry once. Don't cheap out on batteries - get at least 5Ah.

I'm with Tim on cordless! I use my Ryobi 18V for everything (yes, even though I'm mostly drywall lol). For a deck, you'll be doing SO many screws. The impact driver makes it way easier - it has that hammering action so you don't have to push as hard. Ryobi is more budget friendly and their batteries work across all their tools. I've had mine for 3 years and it's still going strong!

As the HVAC guy who occasionally helps friends with decks... Milwaukee M18 all day. Their Fuel line is a beast. The impact driver has enough torque to snap screws if you're not careful (ask me how I know lol). But seriously, if you're going to be doing more projects, invest in a good battery platform. The batteries are expensive but they last. Oh and get a right-angle attachment for those tight spots between joists!

Thanks everyone! Sounds like cordless is the consensus. ToolTimeTim - 'buy once cry once' might be my new motto lol. I'm leaning toward DeWalt since my local Tool Discount Club has a sale on their XR combo kit. PipePaul - good call on the right-angle attachment, didn't think of that. Appreciate all the advice!
