Decking out a new deck - what grinder should I get?

Hey everyone! I'm building a 20x12 deck in my backyard, and I need to cut some steel brackets and maybe grind down some welds on the joist hangers. I'm a beginner, so I don't want to spend a fortune. What grinder would you recommend? I'm looking at either a corded or cordless, but I don't have any batteries yet. Thanks!

For a deck project, you can't go wrong with a 4-1/2" angle grinder. I'd get a corded one for continuous power, especially if you're doing a lot of grinding. The DeWalt DWE402 is a beast, but if you want something cheaper, the Makita GA4030 is solid. Just make sure you get a good grinding disc and a flap disc for smoothing. Also, don't forget safety glasses and gloves!

I'm with Dan on the corded grinders, but if you're going cordless, Makita's 18V LXT grinder is super convenient. I use it on job sites all the time. But for deck work, you're probably better off corded to avoid swapping batteries. Also, consider a grinder with a paddle switch for safety - it stops when you let go. One more thing: for cutting steel brackets, a thin cut-off wheel works best. Just be careful not to bind it.

If you're just doing a one-time project, maybe rent a grinder from Home Depot? But if you think you'll use it again, I'd get a decent one. I've got a collection, but my go-to is an old Craftsman that's still going strong. For a beginner, I'd say get a cheap one first - you'll learn what you like and don't like. And don't forget to check the arbor size - most are 5/8" but some are M10.
