DeWalt vs Makita angle grinder - which one won't break the bank?

Hey guys, I'm in the market for a new angle grinder. I've been using a cheapo one from Harbor Freight for years but it finally died. I'm looking at DeWalt and Makita now. I don't need anything fancy, just something reliable for occasional DIY projects (cutting metal, grinding welds, etc). Which brand gives the best bang for the buck? I see DeWalt often has sales but Makita seems to have a cult following. Any advice?

Makita all the way! I've had my Makita grinder for 8 years and it's still going strong. Yeah, they cost a bit more upfront, but you get what you pay for. DeWalt is fine, but Makita is the gold standard for grinders. Plus, their customer service is top-notch. Just my 2 cents.

As a contractor, I've used both extensively. DeWalt grinders are workhorses and parts are easy to find. Makita might have a slight edge in durability, but DeWalt's ergonomics are better for long sessions. If you're on a budget, check out factory reconditioned DeWalt - I've bought several and they last. Honestly, for DIY use, either will serve you well. Just make sure you get one with a paddle switch, not a slide switch. Safer.

I'm an apprentice and my journeyman swears by Makita. He says DeWalt is for people who don't know better lol. But I bought a DeWalt because it was on sale and it's been fine for me. I think it's more about the specific model than the brand. What's your budget? That might help narrow it down.

Thanks for the replies! Budget is around $100. I see a DeWalt DWE402 for $79 and a Makita 9557PB for $99. The Makita is at the top of my range. Is it worth the extra $20? Also, BuildItBob, thanks for the tip on reconditioned tools - I'll look into that.
