Don't skip the PPE! My close call with a grinder disc

Hey everyone, just wanted to share a quick safety tip. Yesterday I was using my angle grinder to cut some metal, and I wasn't wearing my face shield. A piece of the cutting disc flew off and hit me right in the cheek! Luckily it was just a small fragment, but it stung like crazy and left a mark. Now I'm ordering a full face shield. Don't be like me, wear your PPE! What do you guys use for grinder safety?

Dude, glad you're OK! That could've been nasty. I always wear a face shield AND safety glasses underneath. I also use a dust mask or respirator when cutting metal or concrete. One thing I learned: make sure the guard is positioned correctly. I saw a guy take a disc to the leg once cuz his guard was rotated wrong. Stay safe!

Great advice! I also recommend getting a grinder with a brake. Stops the disc quickly after you release the trigger. Saves you from accidental cuts when setting it down. And for hearing, don't forget earplugs -- those things are loud. I have a pair of electronic muffs that amplify low sounds so I can still hear conversations. Worth the investment.

Thanks for the tips! I'll look into those electronic muffs, and I'm definitely getting a face shield today. Better late than never. Any recommendations for a good one that doesn't fog up?

I use a 3M speedglas with a clear visor. It has an anti-fog coating, works great. A little pricey but your eyes are priceless. Also, make sure to get a visor that covers your neck too -- sparks love to drop down there if you're grinding overhead.
